MOOC in nurses' orientation

Laurea University of Applied Sciences is investing in online learning, offering a wide range of MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) that serve both the general public and various supplementary educational needs.

Mika Alastalo, a Doctor of Health Sciences and a senior lecturer at Laurea, who conducted his doctoral thesis on the monitoring of patients' clinical conditions in intensive care units, has found in his research that nurses working in intensive care should develop their skills in observing patients' clinical conditions. He decided to create a MOOC on the topic, which could be used as part of the orientation for intensive care nurses. Another content expert and instructor on the course is Lotta Tiikkainen, a lecturer at Laurea.

The pilot version of the course was introduced as part of the orientation for new nurses at Seinäjoki Central Hospital and TAYS intensive care units at the beginning of 2024. After the pilot phase, the course will also become part of Laurea's open MOOC offerings.
